The go-bag: what to carry when you carry everything

When everything you own fits in a bag, every item has to earn its place. This list was put together from advice shared by people who've lived out of a pack — the stuff that actually matters, in order of priority.

Documents — protect these like your life depends on it

  • ID, Social Security card, birth certificate — in a zip-lock bag, always on your body
  • Phone photos of every document as backup
  • A written list of important numbers (case workers, family, 211, 988)

Warmth & shelter

  • Sleeping bag rated for the season — or two cheap blankets layered
  • Warm socks (wool if you can get them) and a dry change of clothes in a zip-lock
  • Tarp or emergency blanket — doubles as ground cover and rain shelter
  • Beanie and gloves once temperatures drop

Health & hygiene

  • Any medications, plus a written list of prescriptions and doses
  • Travel toothbrush, soap, deodorant — day shelters and libraries often restock these free
  • Basic first aid: bandages, antiseptic wipes, blister pads
  • Water bottle — refill at libraries, fast-food drink stations, park fountains

Power & connection

  • Phone charger and cable — libraries, shelters, and many buses have outlets
  • A cheap power bank if you can get one; charge it whenever you find an outlet
  • Small flashlight or headlamp

What to leave out

Weight is the enemy. If you haven't used it in a week, it doesn't belong. Sentimental items hurt the most to lose — keep one small thing, photograph the rest. And never carry anything you can't afford to have taken: sleep with your bag as your pillow or strapped to you.

One more thing: pack for the weather you're in, not the weather you wish for. Check the forecast at the library before you move on.
